Global successes pave new ways

Three first worldwide prizes for the people of PricewaterhouseCoopers Cyprus in the exams of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales

PricewaterhouseCoopers honoured their trainee accountants who achieved three out of the six worldwide first prizes in the exams of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) in a special ceremony on Thursday, 11 February 2010 at Hilton Hotel. This mainly reflects the high standards of quality, professionalism and training for the accounting profession in Cyprus.

The trainee accountants honoured for their success were:
Vasso Kakota - First place and the Watts Prize in the Audit & Assurance paper
Elena Kanna - First place and the Little Prize in the Taxation paper
Denis Gulyarenko - First place and the Spicer & Pegler Prize for his performance in the Financial Accounting paper

Present at the ceremony to congratulate the award winners were the Minister of Finance Mr Charilaos Stavrakis, the Counsellor of the Embassy of Russia Mr Victor Morozov, the Chief Executive Officer of the ICAEW Mr Michael Izza, the President of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus Mr Nicos Syrimis, representatives of the students’ universities, the president of the Council of the University of Nicosia Dr Nicos Peristianis, instructors of Intercollege and PwC Academy as well as responsible partners and their coaches form PwC.

The Deputy Managing Partner of PwC Mr Dinos Papadopoulos noted in his speech that in 1993 Cyprus was the first market outside the UK to offer the ACA qualification from ICAEW. In addition PwC was the first organisation in Cyprus which was given authorisation from ICAEW to train chartered accountants. Today PwC has more than 1000 qualified members and more than 210 trainee accountants, 182 from Cyprus, 17 from Russia and 8 from other countries. Since 1993 more than 350 qualified accountants trained in PwC. Eleven PwC members excelled in the ICAEW examinations winning first places in various subjects.

Mr Papadopoulos stressed that the success of the trainee accountants delivers a strong message: Success is the result of professionalism, hard work and devotion in one’s goal.
